Sports are about so much more than just the games; they’re about the drive, the camaraderie, and the doors they open for your future. You've invested countless hours into honing your skills, and your team depends on your passion and commitment just as much as you lean on them.
Facing an injury can feel like a significant setback, and it’s not just a physical challenge—it’s an emotional one. Remember, you’re not just another player; you’re a vital part of something bigger. This moment doesn’t define you. Use it as a stepping stone toward your comeback. Your journey is far from over.
When you visited a doctor were you told any of the following?
“Rest for 6-8 weeks and come back if it doesn’t get better” (it’s the middle of the season)
“Take these meds and see if it improves”
“We can perform surgery if it doesn’t get better”
“Do these exercises every day” (it’s too easy after a week)
“You’re done with rehab, there’s nothing more you can do” (but you still don’t feel confident sprinting or cutting)
“You should switch to non-impact exercise like swimming or biking”
If so, consider the following:
Most PT clinic’s goals are to get you out of pain with normal, everyday activities. But there is still a gap between generalized rehab and peak sports performance. Trying to navigate that by yourself can be difficult, how do you know if you’re truly ready to return and play at your best?
While resting is an important part of the recovery process, there’s more you can do during that time to ensure a strong comeback. You deserve someone that understands the unique demands of sports. Work with a specialist in sports medicine to receive the right guidance and streamline your recovery. Not only will you get back in the game but you’ll be stronger than ever. Your comeback starts now.
The Versatile Athlete Physical Therapy Story
I’m Dr. Kristine Sweezey, and I started The Versatile Athlete Physical Therapy for people like you. I played a variety of sports year round paired with rigorous club team schedules which eventually led to chronic back pain and discouraging doctor visits where I was advised to “just rest” or “quit playing”. Unfortunately, that advice is very common.
To this day, I still recall the frustration I felt with the healthcare professionals I sought help from when I was experiencing pain. I specialize in helping athletes get out of pain and back to their optimal performance. I particularly enjoy working with this population because I understand the unique challenges they face when it comes to managing training load and staying healthy.
Rehab like an athlete:
When you come to Versatile Athlete Physical Therapy, you’ll be surrounded by other athletes who are either recovering from injuries or training to improve performance. You'll experience rehab at a sports performance facility, focus on the specific movements required for your sport, and gradually build your strength back to full capacity. You’ll work with me 1-on-1 for the full session so that we can identify the root of your problems, strengthen your weaknesses, and monitor your progress.
Throughout your recovery, we’ll collaborate with everyone in your corner - parents, coaches, doctors, athletic trainers, and teams - to keep you involved at the right level. I’ll never just tell you what you can’t do. I’ll also tell you what you CAN do to keep improving, stay connected to your team, and get back as soon as possible. Before you step on the field, we’ll practice everything in the gym first, so you’ll have complete confidence in your ability to perform without hurting or risking reinjury.
Because I know athletes, you will rehab like an athlete, and will get back to being your healthy, strong, confident self.
Meet the team
Dr. Kristine Sweezey
PT, DPT, CSCS , Owner and Founder of Versatile Athlete Physical Therapy
I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia playing a variety of sports year round, as long as I can remember. I loved competing, but due to my small size, I was always matched up against a girl that was bigger than me. Getting roughed up was a part of the game, paired with rigorous club/travel team schedules (with little rest time) eventually led to chronic back pain which led to discouraging doctor visits where I was advised to “just rest” or “quit playing”.
My time in the athletic training room made me curious about how long injuries would take to recover or why specific exercises would help. This led me to studying kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science from James Madison University (Go Dukes!). When I discovered physical therapy my senior year of college, I knew it was exactly what I was meant to do.
I became certified as an Exercise Physiologist and worked as a personal trainer for a year before getting my Doctorate of Physical Therapy from University of New England in Portland, Maine.
To this day, I vividly remember the frustration I felt with the healthcare professionals I turned to during my injury; my visits were unproductive. That experience fuels my passion for helping my clients today. I have a vast understanding of strength and rehab principles to develop personalized programs tailored to an individual’s needs. From the very start, I’ll provide a clear roadmap to help you achieve your goals and get back to doing what you love.
I work alongside The Versatile Athlete - a sports performance training facility that focuses on building strong and healthy individuals. Together, we integrate the best of training and rehab to create a place where athletes can develop and thrive at the highest level.
